What Is Local 706?

Local 706 is the union for Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists who work in:

  • Movies, Streaming and TV shows (Roster)
  • TV Commercial Roster  (non-IER)
  • Theater- Live /Traveling Events (non-Roster)
  • Network Broadcasting- Daytime only News, Sports, Talk shows and Soap Operas (non-Roster)
  • Theme Park (non-Roster)
  • Other entertainment jobs under union contracts

Can You Join on a Visa?

HOW TO JOIN: The Roster (IER)  

✅ 1. “60-60-60” Method (for Film, Streaming & TV work) on non-union productions

What it means:
You need to work 60 days per year for 3 different years (not necessarily in a row) within the last 5 years—on non-union productions in L.A. County paid at least minimum wage for 8 hours a day.

Steps:

  1. Keep paycheck records and call sheets from all the products you have worked on that would qualify for the 60 days each year.
  2. Sign up with Contract Services (CSATF) and create an account on www.csatf.org (818) 565-0550 to keep track of your work history, which needs updating regularly.
  3. CSATF will require:
    • ID, recent pay stub, and cosmetology license (for Hair Stylists).
    • Make-Up Artists must take a color blindness test (with contract services).
    • Must complete safety classes on the CSATF website.
  4. If approved, you’ll receive a letter from Local 706 and Contract Services stating you’re qualified to join.
  5. Contact Local 706, make an appointment to fill out your application, and pay your dues and initiation fee.

✅ 2.  60 days of work on a union production with Mandatory Star-Waiver

What it means:
Work 60 days total on the same union project.

Steps:

  1. The Producer will need to call 706 to request a Star-Waiver.  The producers will have to fill out a request and include your previous work history with the “Star” on 3 different projects.
  2. Retain proof of working your 60 days on the Star-Waiver
  3. Sign up with Contract Services (CSATF) and create an account on www.csatf.org (818) 565-0550 to keep track of your work history, which needs updating regularly.
  1. CSATF will require:
    • ID, recent pay stub, and cosmetology license (for Hair Stylists).
    • Make-up Artists must take a color blindness test (with contract services).
    • Must complete safety classes on the CSATF website.
  1. If approved, you’ll receive a letter from Local 706 and Contract Services stating you’re qualified to join.
  2. Contact Local 706, make an appointment to fill out your application, and pay your dues and initiation fee.

✅ 30 days on a Non-Union production that organizes (flipping) to a union production.

  1. Must have proof of working on the production prior to production flipping (deal memo, call sheet or paycheck)
  2. Sign up with Contract Services (CSATF) and create an account on www.csatf.org (818) 565-0550 to keep track of your work history, which needs updating regularly.
  3. CSATF will require:
    • ID, recent pay stub, and cosmetology license (for Hair Stylists).
    • Make-Up Artists must take a color blindness test (with contract services).
    • Must complete safety classes on the CSATF website.
  4. If approved, you’ll receive a letter from Local 706 and Contract Services stating you’re qualified to join.
  5. Contact Local 706, make an appointment to fill out your application, and pay your dues and initiation fee.

HOW TO JOIN: Non-Roster

For Network TV or Theater Work (non-Roster)

 You are encouraged to get in touch with the Theaters and/or Networks (Daytime only – News, Sports, Talk shows and Soap Operas) when applying for a Make-Up Artist or Hair Stylist position.

  1. After you have worked 30 days within a year, bring proof (check stubs or records) of 30 union work days.  Contact Local 706 (818) 295-3933 ext. 1102 to submit your information.
  2. Once your days are vetted, you’ll receive a letter from Local 706 stating you’re qualified to join.
  3. Make an appointment to fill out the application with Local 706, pay your dues and initiation fee.
  4. Hair Stylists: Bring your cosmetologist license.

THEATRICAL

  1. Thirty (30) days employment with Theatrical Stage productions, signatory to Local 706 contracts, and qualifying by providing all documentation.

PINK CONTRACT

  1. Thirty (30) days employment with Theatrical Stage productions within the State of California, signatory to Local 706 contracts, and qualifying by providing all documentation.

CALIFORNIA REGIONAL

  1. Working on a production signatory to Local 706 contracts within the State of California and qualifying by providing all documentation.

✅ THEME PARK (Disneyland)

Disneyland has their own application and hiring process.  You are encouraged to apply at; https://jobs.disneycareers.com. After passing the probation period (90 days) membership is a requirement.

  1. Once you have completed your probationary period you will be contacted by Local 706 requesting your membership.
